SEO finding
hreflang, the lang attribute, the URL folder, the currency and the text name different languages
SEO Warning Severity: Medium
Part of the audit Language and region signals disagree. Finding id: seo.languageSignalsDisagree.
What it costs you
Search engines read the text to decide the language and ignore tags that contradict it. The page is then shown to the wrong visitors, or the language versions are not linked to each other in search results.
What to do
Make the hreflang value, the lang attribute, the URL folder and the currency match the language and market the text is written for.
What it checks
- Language tag does not match the text
- Page language differs from language link
- Address folder does not match content language
- Currency does not match the region
- Parts of the page left untranslated
How to fix it
Align the tags with the text
- Open [url] and confirm the language of the text and the market it is meant for.
- If the text is right: set the lang attribute and the hreflang value to that language, on this page and on every page that points to it.
- If the text is wrong: the translation is missing. Translate the page, or remove it from the hreflang set until it is.
- For template parts in another language, translate the header, navigation and footer strings of that language version.
How to check: Run this rule again on the site.
Thresholds
| Name | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
min_template_words | 20 | Words outside the main content that must be in another language before the template counts as untranslated. Short labels are detected unreliably. |
How to verify by hand
Search Console clicks by country for the URL; a person for the intended market.
What this relies on
The text on the page is the truth; the tags were copied from another language version.
