SEO finding

Structured data on the page cannot be read

SEO Error Severity: Medium

Part of the audit Structured data and social tags. Finding id: seo.structuredDataInvalid.

What it costs you

Search engines skip structured data they cannot read. The page loses its rich result, such as price, rating or breadcrumb, without any visible error on the page.

What to do

Correct the markup at the place the message names, then test the page again.

What it checks

  • Structured data has syntax errors
  • Older structured data formats have errors

How to fix it

Repair the markup where it is generated

  1. Find what prints the block: the theme, a plugin, a tag manager or hand-written code.
  2. JSON-LD: the usual causes are a trailing comma, an unescaped quote in a text value, or a value cut off by a template. Build the JSON with a JSON encoder, not by joining strings.
  3. Microdata and RDFa: check that every property sits inside an element that declares its type.
  4. If the same type is printed twice by two systems, remove one.

How to check: Recrawl the page and run this rule again. Search engines also offer their own rich result test for a single URL.
