SEO finding

Files are sent uncompressed, unminified or without a cache lifetime, or the HTML is very large

SEO Warning Severity: Medium

Part of the audit Delivery and caching. Finding id: seo.resourceDelivery.

What it costs you

Visitors download more than they need. On a phone connection that is the difference between a page that appears and one that is abandoned.

What to do

Change how [group key] sends its files.

What it checks

  • Text files not compressed
  • Script and style files not shrunk
  • No caching instructions
  • Page code too large
  • Files cached for too short a time

How to fix it

Make the HTML document smaller

  1. View the source of [url] and look for what fills it: inline scripts, inline styles, embedded data or a very long list.
  2. Move scripts and styles to files, so the browser can cache them.
  3. Load data when it is needed, and split long lists over several pages.

How to check: Recrawl the page: the HTML is under [max html bytes] bytes.

Decide what to do with the third-party file

  1. Check whether the page still needs [url].
  2. If not, remove it. If yes, ask the company to change how it is sent, or host the file yourself if their terms allow it.

How to check: Recrawl the site and run this rule again.

Minify scripts and stylesheets

  1. If the site has a build step, turn on minification there for production builds.
  2. If a CMS serves the files, look for its own setting or a plugin that minifies, and test the site after turning it on.
  3. A CDN in front of the site may offer minification as a setting.

How to check: Open [url]: the file has no comments and no line breaks between statements.

Turn on compression

    Set a cache lifetime

      Thresholds

Thresholds for Files are sent uncompressed, unminified or without a cache lifetime, or the HTML is very large
      NameDefaultMeaning
compress_min_bytes1400Text files at or below this size are not reported for missing compression. The saving is too small.
minify_min_bytes2000Scripts and stylesheets at or below this size are not reported as unminified.
min_cache_seconds86400Shortest cache lifetime a static file should have. One day by default, the threshold janreges/siteone-crawler uses for static assets with a short cache (SHORT_CACHE_THRESHOLD_SECONDS = 86400 in src/analysis/caching_analyzer.rs, read 2026-10-17).
max_html_bytes500000Largest HTML document, in bytes before compression, that is not reported.
