SEO finding
Two pages are shown for the same search query
SEO Info Severity: Low
Part of the audit Duplicate and competing content. Finding id: seo.pagesCompetingForQuery.
What it costs you
When two of your pages answer the same query, search engines switch between them and neither builds a stable position.
What to do
Decide which page should rank for the query. Merge the other into it, or change its subject and link from it to the chosen page.
What it checks
- Pages competing for the same keyword
How to fix it
Choose one page per query
- Compare the two pages: do they answer the same question?
- If yes, move the best content to the stronger page and redirect the other with a 301.
- If no, make the difference clear in title and h1, and link from each page to the other with a descriptive anchor.
How to check: Look at the query in Search Console after four weeks: one URL holds the impressions.
Thresholds
| Name | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
min_impressions | 100 | Both pages must have at least this many impressions for the query in 28 days. |
How to verify by hand
Read both pages. If they serve different intents (buy and learn), nothing needs to change.
What this relies on
Two pages that both get impressions for one query split the clicks and links that one page could have had.
