SEO finding

A list loads more items on scroll, with no links to further pages

SEO Warning Severity: Medium

Part of the audit Internal linking and site structure. Finding id: seo.infiniteScrollWithoutPages.

What it costs you

Search engines see only the first items. Products or articles further down the list are found only if something else links to them.

What to do

Give every batch its own address (?page=2) and link to the next page with a plain link, also when scrolling loads it, and update the address as the visitor scrolls.

What it checks

  • Endless scroll without page links

How to fix it

Back infinite scroll with paged addresses

  1. Make the list available as pages: /list?page=2, /list?page=3, each with its own items.
  2. Put a plain <a href> to the next page at the end of the list in the HTML; scripts may still load it on scroll.
  3. Update the address with history.pushState as each page loads, so a shared link opens the right place.

How to check: Fetch [page url] without JavaScript: the HTML holds a link to page 2, and page 2 lists the next items.
