SEO finding

The http, https, www and non-www versions do not all redirect cleanly to one address

SEO Warning Severity: Medium

Part of the audit Host and protocol variants. Finding id: seo.hostVariantRedirects.

What it costs you

The http, https, www and non-www versions of the address do not lead to one place in one step.

What to do

Pick one address. Send each other version to it with a single 301 redirect.

What it checks

  • Several site address versions all load
  • Redirect between versions not permanent
  • Chain of redirects between versions

How to fix it

Choose one address

  1. Decide which address is the real one: https, and either with or without www.
  2. Redirect the other versions straight to it with status 301, keeping the path. Run this rule again to get the exact lines for each.
  3. If a CDN or the host's control panel also redirects, set the rule in one place only. Two places cause chains.

How to check: curl -sI [url] shows status 301 and a Location header with the final address.
