QA finding
Wrongly decoded characters, raw Markdown or escaped HTML in the visible text
QA Warning Severity: Medium
Part of the audit Leftovers that shipped with the site. Finding id: qa.leftoversInText.
What it costs you
Visitors see asterisks, brackets or & where there should be bold text, links or plain characters. It looks unfinished and makes the text harder to read.
What to do
Let the CMS render the Markdown, or remove the double escaping, so the text shows as intended.
What it checks
- Garbled characters in text
- Raw formatting code visible in text
How to fix it
Correct the characters
Render the markup
- Find where the text at [selector] comes from: a content field, an import, or a template.
- Markdown: let the field be rendered as Markdown, or write the formatting with the editor instead.
- Escaped HTML (&, <p>): the text is escaped twice. Escape it once, where it is written into the page.
How to check: Reload [page url]: the passage shows formatted text.
