What it costs you
A screen reader reads the text with the pronunciation rules of the declared language, which makes it hard or impossible to follow. Search engines and translation tools are told the wrong language too.
What to do
Set lang on the html element to the real language of the page, and put a lang attribute on any passage in another language.
