Accessibility finding
A form field gets its name from the placeholder only
Accessibility Warning Severity: Medium
Part of the audit The visible label and the accessible name differ. Finding id: accessibility.placeholderAsLabel.
What it costs you
The hint is gone once someone starts typing. People with memory or attention difficulties, and anyone checking a filled form, can no longer see what each field asked for. Placeholder text is also often too pale to read.
What to do
Give the field a visible label and keep the placeholder for an example of the input, if you keep it at all.
What it checks
- Placeholder used as only label
How to fix it
Add a label element tied to the field
How to check: Recrawl: the field's name comes from the label. Click the label: the cursor goes into the field.
A real case
WebAIM's 2026 scan of the top one million home pages found form fields without a label on 51% of them.
How to verify by hand
A person: type in the field and see whether it is still clear what it asks for.
What this relies on
The placeholder was meant as a hint, and the label was left out to save space.
