Questions only a person can answer, open or answered with "fails"

Accessibility Info Severity: Medium

Part of the audit Assisted review. Finding id: accessibility.manualReview.

What it costs you

Until someone decides, nobody knows whether this part works for the people it is meant to serve.

What to do

Answer the question and record the decision. One decision per template is enough.

What it checks

  • Are captions accurate
  • Are error messages helpful

How to fix it

Answer the question, record it, fix what fails

  1. Open [unit url] and find the place ([selector]).
  2. Answer the question: [question]
  3. Record pass, fail or not applicable with your name and the date. The record is the evidence that the check was done.
  4. For a fail, fix it at the source (the template, the media file, the document) and open the question again.

How to check: The question has a decision other than open or fail.

A real case

Deaf plaintiffs sued Harvard in 2015 because much of its online video and audio had no captions or inaccurate ones. In the 2019 settlement Harvard agreed to caption its online content and to pay the plaintiffs' legal fees of nearly 1.6 million dollars.
