Accessibility finding
A linked document differs from the page that links to it
Accessibility Warning Severity: Medium
Part of the audit The document alternative is not equivalent to the page. Finding id: accessibility.htmlVsDocument.
What it costs you
A screen reader announces the title inside the file when it opens. When that is a file name or another title than the link promised, its user cannot tell whether the right file opened.
What to do
Set the title in the file's properties to the name the links use, and upload the file again at the same URL.
What it checks
- Document is only source and untagged
- Document title differs from link text
- Document language differs from page
How to fix it
Make the link and the file agree
- Set the title in the file's properties to the name the links use.
- For an untagged PDF that is the only source: put the content on a web page, or export a tagged PDF from the source file.
How to check: Recrawl: the file is no longer reported.
A real case
UK monitoring of public sector websites in 2020 and 2021 found PDFs generally less accessible than web pages, often without the information assistive technology needs. In the simplified tests there was normally an issue with the PDF that was tested.
